Buddies

The value of the bond between dogs and minors under guardianship.

Buddies is our therapy programme for minors under guardianship. These minors learn to train previously selected dogs using a methodology based on positive reinforcement, which emphasises the wellbeing of the animal and its trainer (the children).

As the days go by, the bond between them becomes stronger and stronger, and the benefits of the Buddies Programme are felt week on week.

Why we created this programme

The programme is based on the potential that animal-assisted therapies have to improve human relationships and generate positive effects on health. With Buddies, we emphasise the relational benefits that come from working with therapy dogs, thanks to their intrinsic personality: invariable response, fidelity, serenity and inability to make value judgements.

On this basis, trainers or therapists can show children and their families the results of good treatment and communication based on respect, thus promoting a positive parenting model.

How the programme works

What benefits does the programme have?

  • The children work on having a positive attitude towards society, and on improving their communication and ability to express feelings
  • They learn basic lessons that they can then extrapolate to other areas of life to improve their mood
  • They improve physically and mentally, increasing their self-esteem and self-confidence
  • They improve their capacity for self-control and tolerance to frustrating experiences
